JOB TITLE: Lifeguard

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Recreation Supervisor

DIRECTION OF OTHERS: None

NATURE OF WORK: Monitor activity on pool decks, beaches and in water for overall safety of guests at each facility; prevent and respond to emergencies.  General overall set-up, maintenance and up-keep of the facilities, equipment and amenities.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Lifeguard Training

 

WORK PERFORMED/AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

I.Possess a thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance.

 

II. Have good decision making skills.

 

III. Familiar with emergency procedures.  Recognize and maintain a high level of readiness to respond to emergency situations.

IV. Assist guests and participants as needed, including administering basic First Aid and Lifeguarding skills as outlined by the American Red Cross and Parks & Recreation.

 

V. Inspect facilities and equipment on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions to Supervisor.

 

VI. Perform light maintenance as required but not limited to event set-up, general cleaning, emptying garbage containers and filling product.

 

VII. Complete records and reports

 

VIII. Attend meetings, in-services and trainings as scheduled.

 

IX. Familiar with, Enforce and uphold facility policies and procedures created in accordance with OSHA, The American Red Cross, Minnesota State Health Department and Owatonna Parks & Recreation

 

X. Complete other tasks as assigned by supervisor

 

 

 

 

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS

I. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certifications.  If working at Water Park: Current American Red Cross Water Park Skills Certification.

 

EQUIPMENT AND TOOL OPERATION

I. Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous office equipment, safety, janitorial and other equipment relative to this position which shall include but may not be limited to: Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Oxygen Tank, Rescue Equipment, personal computer, copier, fax machine, communication equipment and related items.

 

WORKING HOURS AND CONDITIONS

I. This is a position with scheduled shifts including days, evening, weekends, and holidays at various facilities and locations including indoor and outdoor, with all types of weather conditions, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

II. The following represents the Physical and Environmental Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to seventy-five (75) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
