IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Wastewater Plant Superintendent


EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: High School graduate and required to be certified as a Class "C" Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator as determined by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Shall have at least 3 years experience in operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.

NATURE OF WORK: Performs a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the plant and lift stations. Assists in sampling and performing laboratory tests. Assists in performing skilled work to control physical, chemical and biological treatment of waste water. Operates light and heavy equipment used in maintaining the sewer collection system and other areas as assigned.


I. Complies with Federal and State regulations by maintaining complete and accurate records.

A. Assists in routine laboratory tests.
B. Records gas readings, digester temperatures, influent and effluent temperatures, weather and other instrument readings according to operating procedures.
C. Samples waste water and solids processing throughout the system and keeps records of such.

II. Assures proper operation of treatment plant through regular maintenance programs.

A. Operates components of waste water treatment processes as directed.
B. Makes operation checks on sewer, sludge and recycle water pumps.
C. Examines and maintains ventilators, boilers, filters, pumps, valves and pipes.
D. Checks and maintains chlorinator, valves and controls.
E. Maintains and lubricates equipment.

III. Maintains equipment, facilities and grounds through periodic inspection as required.

A. Inspects and services trucks, lawn mowers and other equipment as needed.
B. Repairs and replaces pumps, motors, gate valves
C. Makes repairs to buildings as necessary.
D. Operates welding equipment.
E. Maintains grounds and fences.
F. Cleans out plugged pipes and lines.
G. Performs plumbing and pipe fitting tasks.

VI. Operates and maintains vehicles.

A. Operates vehicles as required to maintain facility and dispose of sludge and solids.
B. Performs custodial duties to maintain a neat and orderly work place.
C. Operates equipment necessary for the proper maintenance of the sewer collection system.
D. Operates plow trucks as assigned as part of the City's snow removal program.

V. Performs all other job-related activities as directed.


I. Maintains good relations with land owners in the disposal and spreading of sludge.


I. Must have a valid State of MN Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement.

II. Must be certified as a Class "C" Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator as determined by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

III. All required licenses and certifications must be maintained active and valid by the employee.


I. Motor vehicle, generators, pumps, gauges, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, calculator, dial indicator, multiple meters, calipers, and a variety of lab equipment.


I. The typical work week consists of five eight hour days, generally 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. This is a non-exempt position.

II. While performing the duties of this job, the employee works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed daily to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and occasionally confronted with fumes and airborne particles, risk of electrical hazards, and vibration. The employee works with toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
